ITEM- 1982 Roger Gutheil 1:12 Dollhouse Slant Top Desk 1999 Roger Gutheil Chair upholstered by Gail Steffey Plus Extras Frank Matter Letter & Magnifying Glass Etc. DESCRIPTION- The slant top desk was made by Roger L. Gutheil in 1982 (signed) & is truly wonderful, looks much better in person than these flash photos show. It has little pull out supports to hold the lid up, which are made so they can't be pulled out all the way.
Inside are 6 cubby spaces. The chair is just like the ones from 1982 would've been but the one I found was from 1999 & was upholstered by Gail Steffey (who both signed the bottom). He made these pieces for decades, but you seldom find the desk with a chair.
The color is neither red nor green, but just Gutheil's normal wonderful brown. This is OOAK only in the sense of the combination of items I added. I put this desk together, adding accessories using some nice artisan pieces. The magnifying glass you see now (since I misplaced the previous smaller one) was made by me, Chris Wood, hand turned on a lathe, hand signed microscopically in cursive in the space of 1mm "Chris Wood 2020". I don't do metal work, but I do have a wood lathe, so I turned this one painfully slowly & though it's larger than the other one at 3/8" X 7/8", it is a one-of-a-kind, 1 of 1 by me, Chris Wood. See last photo for size of signature & also see the next to last showing the tip of a regular small stickpin next to it. The candlesticks are turned brass by Tretters. The inkwell is a vintage piece of pewter by Williamsburg & came with the gorgeous quill pen. The small folded letter was one of my first ever small (poor) writing attempts from 6 years ago. You should be able to read it in the close-ups but it says, July 6, 1786 W. Drake, I wrote this small letter to say you have good eyesight if you can read this. " The little envelope was made & folded & written by me & just says, "Holly D.The other sage-colored envelope & letter inside, was bought from the Joseph Gray estate & was printed expertly by Frank Matter. The envelope says from "5 July 1977 Alex Prince 401 Holly Denver Colo 80163" to "Miss Jennifer Johnson 200 Sutton Manor New Rochelle, New York 10805". The letter inside says, "June 10, 1976 Dear Jen, "O, my Luve is like a red, red rose, That's newly sprung in June. O; my luve is like a melodie, That's sweetly Play'd in Tune.
Robert Burns 1759-96' Forever, Alex. I actually forgot this letter opened when I staged this or I would've used it instead of adding my own letter, consider mine a bonus. The 4 leather faux books are by Kristin's Kreations (who does nice work but just don't ever ask her to do a commission no matter how much you're willing to pay because she'll likely be as rude to you as she was to me & tell you to get some leather & a scissors & do it yourself). The little photo frame with the photo of the lady may be too late of period for what you might use this for, but if so, just use it elsewhere. I had it handy & liked it there. MEASUREMENTS- Desk is 3 & 5/16" tall X 2 & 3/8" wide X 1 & 5/8 deep.
Chair is 3 & 1/2" tall X 1 & 7/8" wide X 1 & 3/4 deep. MAKER- The late Roger Gutheil was an IGMA Fellow (their highest rank) of considerable skill.
His pieces are benchmarks in quality in the dollhouse world & were for decades. Gutheil began crafting fine miniatures in the tradition of early craftsmen in 1962, when he began working anonymously for one of the older miniature studios in the country, Chestnut Hill Studios.
Over the years, he and his wife Nancy designed and created some of the finest miniatures available. His extensive knowledge of wood and woodworking enabled him to solve the technical problems of miniature making. Together they offered a wide range of talents which were reflected in their artwork. In 1977 they introduced an entirely new line of miniatures to the discriminating collector as Roger L. For the first time, collectors recognized the crafts people responsible for the miniatures they had long admired.
These reproductions were designed from the finest examples of 18th and 19th century furniture and accessories in museums and private collections. Their knowledge of these periods was reflected in the outstanding and often unique examples they chose. Each piece in the collection was precisely scaled one inch to the foot with emphasis on the details. Before a piece was miniaturized, measurements were taken, angles and curves recorded, and scaled drawings were produced.
The cherry and maple woods used were carefully selected for fineness of grain and workability. Painstaking care went into the crafting of each piece with hours involved in the intricate carvings, turnings, moldings, and functional decorative hardware. Only the finest wood stains were used and each piece received a hand rubbed lacquer and wax polish finish. His retirement & subsequent passing represented a great loss to the miniature community.
Gutheil miniatures were designed to be valued collection pieces and heirlooms of tomorrow & today they've become just that. CONDITION- Everything in excellent vintage condition.IMPORTANT NOTES- The little picture frame has a slight flat spot on the very bottom & these inkwells were molded to look like they had a chip in the edge of them. I looked them up on worthpoint & looked through four that all had the same indention on the edge, so it can't be damage, just a design flaw or intended to look old, not sure but not later damage.
