This is a brand new listing as of Mar. 3rd at 1PM CT & was revised from another listing (now that I finally had time). ITEM- Ed Ted Norton Dollhouse Miniature Windsor 6pc Set Armchairs & Side Chairs + Pine Trestle Harvest Table DESCRIPTION- Exceptional Set of 6 Pine Country Windsor Chairs by Ted Norton.
When you look at the overall photo of these without the dime, doesn't it look so much like a full size set against a white wall? My paper walls are the only thing to give it away. The patina these saddle seats have acquired in over 40 years is stunning. The armchairs differ somewhat also in the curve of the hoops (bows) & the arms but they go well together & these differences are commonly seen in full size period Windsor sets. Researching period Windsor sets reveals that the only tables consistently shown to have been used with Windsor sets were Trestle tables. This appropriate New England pine harvest table has a rectangular top with breadboard ends & shoe feet.
This table has a warm, rich patina & is from the 1980's & is signed "CY". I have seen other examples of this artisans work but cannot find out who the artisan was. This one works so well because unlike 99% of all dollhouse trestle tables, it does not have a large mortised stretcher below which gives the chairs much more room to go under the table & would make it easier for miniature guests to be seated at the table without hitting their knees. They have appreciated in more ways than one. The table is 2 & 3/8" tall X 5 & 13/16" long & the chairs are all about 3 & 5/16 tall.
Norton, was called Ed by some, but went by Ted according to his friends. He was one of the founding members of the IGMA & an exceptional IGMA artisan. A former plumber for 15 years, after a back ailment, started making miniatures in 1970 as a hobby & by 1972 was making them full time. Helped by Mel Prescott & Carl Anderson, he quickly became a consummate artisan.
Making primarily period furniture consisting mostly of American Queen Anne & Chippendale furniture & Windsor chairs/settees & a few Colonial dollhouses. His Windsors are among the closest to scale miniature Windsors ever made, with only Jim Ison, Bob Birkemeier, & James Hastrich/Pierre Wallack as company in that honor with some of their Windsors. I say this as someone who collected only miniature chairs for years with Windsors as my main focus. To the untrained eye, most artisan miniature Windsors look great, but to those who have dealt in real Windsor chairs & studied the scale of miniature Windsors, very few actually make the grade in proportions. The spindles are just so hard to get to the correct tiny size in 1:12 scale, but Mr. Norton was a master because he seems to have always gotten the scale right. His seat are properly dished & the hoops (bows) are also of the proper scale. So many other chairs just have a clunky feel to them, but when you study any one of these alone against a plain background, you can't help but appreciate the fine lines & sculptural quality of them. He made them in cherry, pine, & a cherry/pine mix. With the exception of one person, I've never met anyone that appreciates the difficulty in producing such fine Windsors. CONDITION- Excellent overall vintage condition. All pieces sit perfectly flat with no wobble. Chairs have no issues at all. Table has no damage but has three minor issues to note, one from age & two original to the making, all of which are consistent with a period harvest table. From aging, one board of the table has a bit of a warp in it which is ONLY visible when viewed from one side at the exact place where your eyes are even with the table (see top of combo photo 8). This is not noticeable at all from any other angle & is often seen in period tables. The other two original issues which ARE NOT DAMAGE is that the table has two original flaws guaranteed to have been done by the artist. First, there's a spot in the wood that looks like a faded stain but is not as it is under the stain & finish (see any upper view). The other is on one side where the horizontal board meets its breadboard end, there is a small sliver of wood on the edge that is missing, BUT this was stained over by the artist with the same stain & covered with the same finish (see the last photo). In any kind of early setting, these would not be an issue & could be put towards the back. If I had another identical table, I'd replace it, but I don't & it looks too good with it.
I don't mind these issues, which are not really noticeable so much so that I've had these for years & never noticed until listing it. I want to be thorough & make things sound worse than they are so there are no surprises. If you don't like them, as I said before you can write me & I'll sell the chairs without the table.
