Nothing is stuck down so there is no wax or residue. POTTERY & MAKER- This cupboard is wonderfully enhanced by Jane Graber's pottery.
I like any good looking furniture with Graber pottery, but vintage pieces are my favorite. Jane Graber- Though she has mentioned possibly retiring soon & has lowered production, Jane is still an active member of the IGMA (International Guild of Miniature Artisans) & has been making miniature replicas of 18th- and 19th-century American salt-glaze stoneware for more than 36 years, hand-throwing each piece on a potter's wheel, then painting and signing her work. She is internationally recognized for her craft, has been featured on the cover of Ceramics Monthly, and regularly does solo and group shows in the U.
Her work is extraordinary; she is widely recognized as the best living miniaturist potter & without question is definitely the best in terms of stoneware & redware. In the later-1980s, Jane began hand-throwing replicas of early American sgraffito redware, which is quite popular among her collectors and others who love Americana.
Her pieces have great potential for increasing in value & I completely adore them. She is the nicest DH artisan we've ever met or dealt with, no offense to others as we have many other favorites, but that has just been our experience. She has a way of making you feel important when you talk to her & years ago she was no different before we bought one thing than after we spent thousands with her, a very special combination. CUPBOARD & MAKER- This wonderful vintage artisan Sturbridge cupboard with two doors in the base was made by Cindy & Jim Holmes in 1987. Jim made the cupboard & his wife painted it but I'm not sure if just he aged it or if they did it together. Cindy achieved a wonderful aged cyan (blue-green) color on this & an amazing putty brownish gray inside. Stain was added where it is worn & it was hand-rubbed a lot to give it the appearance of being well utilized for many years. Aside from looking old, it is 42 years old which is quite old for to-scale artisan miniatures. If you look at the sides combo photo, the left shows the right cupboard color & the left shows the proper inside putty color. The last photo showing the bottom is the closest I can get to showing the correct colors together. The cupboard measures 6 5/8" tall X 3" wide X 1 7/16 deep. Jim loved to distress DH pieces & may have been the first to consistently do this. He studied a book detailing the work of a famed antique faker & Rhode Island sculptor, Armand LaMontagne who in the 1960's produced a notorious fake Pilgirm-era Brewster Chair for fun to snub the experts & gave it away strategically knowing it would be "found". It would likely never have been found out, had he not admitted to it years later to the Providence Journal. At that point, x-rays were taken & only the shape of the drill hole tips revealed modern manufacture. Had he have altered the hole shapes or used a period spoon drill, they wouldn't have believed it even after his admission. He had used many methods to fake it including using green wood so it would bow afterwards to soaking it in salt water to simulate aging. He went on to damage the piece intentionally from cracks to burns to stains to stray paint to intentional wear to whittling on an arm, all things that would've likely happened to a chair in over 300 years. Jim worked from photos & descriptions in that book to create his aged pieces which are among the best distressed & aged dollhouse miniatures ever made. His work is highly under-appreciated based on the research, time, & effort involved. Furthermore, Jim made his own hinges & hardware. He was a master miniaturist. Jim & Cindy Holmes made some amazing pieces, which I have yet to find duplicates of. Maybe I should've let her. I was sad to see it go.
Apparently, though I haven't seen it, I was told by someone very knowledgeable that their greatest creation was an aged barn antique shop made for Sarah Salisbury. If anyone has photos of it or knows where it could be seen, I'd love to know. CONDITION- The pottery is in new condition, the cupboard is vintage & used but in excellent original condition. The tiny hole in the back was put there on purpose by Jim Holmes who almost always added age & wear to his pieces. I've had pieces with mouse holes he made that even looked chewed on the edges. He also often added intentional age cracks, but not to this piece. Note the delightful "wear" from opening the cupboard doors. We describe our items thoroughly & offer many photos. What you see is what you will get. If you read & look thoroughly, you will get what you expect & hopefully you will be pleased. Our description is our description, no need to study our clear photos to try to see damage we didn't describe, as we always do our best to look closely for issues beforehand so you won't have to upon arrival.
