DESCRIPTION- This armchair was hand carved in wood by John Hodgson. Chippendale side chair with straight reeded stiles, featuring a Cupid's bow (or yoke-shaped) crest (or top rail) with ears (ends) that curve up with central half-moon carving above a pierced, interlaced, strapwork splat with lancet arch & scrolls at upper section above three vertical piercings above the shoe making the shape of a lady's hair comb, over a trapezoidal deep slip seat set within molded seat rails, and the cabriole legs terminating in pad feet. Gorgeous work from a retired artist whose work is scarce.

This is difficult to explain but the crest on this armchair has not been defined, but is flat on the front (see photo 3). The only way I know how to explain this is the way celtic eternity knots are carved is the other type & one of the chairs I have listed, armchair #3 is defined in this way, just study the closeups of the splats on each. This one matches the arm chair #3 in having the same splat (I only ever had 3 chairs listed). The seat is easily removed, and the material can easily be changed. It is one of his absolute earliest pieces, dating to the 1970's & features his first mark using two brands burned separately into the wood, an elf (that looks like a seahorse) on top of a mushroom depending on how it was stamped.

Some of his slightly later, but still early work, features the word ELF & the same symbol basically but made with one single stamp where the design was perfected & you can see it in the 1996 marks book. In these three I have on now, his mark varies depending on the placement of the elf & mushroom over one another, but I guarantee these to be his work. I can provide more information & some links upon request. This chair measures 3 & 1/4.

" tall X 2 & 1/4" deep X 2 & 3/16 wide. Excellent Vintage Condition, no visible damage or issues to chair.

T he edges of the seat material do have minor fraying at the top of the corners. If you want to keep these covers, a tiny drop of white or wood glue would fix this instantly.

If you want to change them out, it's not an issue. NOTE- Hand carved chairs such as these have bumps & imperfections made in the carvings of the crest rails & other parts but they are completely original & very minor. Like, one side might differ from the mirrored side just a bit.
